Types of Facilities and Care

Assisted Living Includes housing, meals, laundry and housekeeping services with personalized supportive services and health care.  These facilities are designed to meet the needs of those individuals who require assistance with daily living activities at varying levels.

Alzheimer’s/Memory Units Facilities who offer special programs for residents who suffer from dementia or other types of memory loss. The facilities offer locked and secured units with in house nursing staff.  These programs can also be offered by Residential, Assisted Living or Long-term care units.

Home Care Providers of health care services who travel to individual homes to provide assistance such as bathing, dressing, meals, medications and transportation.  Healthcare staff can be licensed or unlicensed.

Hospice Hospice services include nursing and health care for end of life management. Hospice specializes in pain management and can include an emotional, spiritual and physical support issues.  Services can be performed at a patient’s home or in a facility.

Skilled Rehabilitation Facilities that specialize in sub-acute care usually after a hospital stay and provide types of therapy including physical, occupational or speech. Rehab stays may also be specific for extensive nursing needs such as IV therapy or wound management. Rehab units may co-exist with a Long Term Care facility.

Long-Term Care/Nursing Home Generally not referred to as nursing homes anymore, Long-Term Care facilities offer more extensive services to those individuals who cannot maintain in a home environment or whose needs exceed those services offered by Assisted Living or Residential care.

Residential Care Usually single family homes or facilities licensed to provide assistance with medications, bathing and dressing.  Facilities will include meals, laundry, housekeeping assistance.

Day Care Some facilities or homes include or specialize in this type of program designed to offer activities geared towards geriatrics and include social, nutritional, nursing and rehabilitation.  Residents return to families in the evening.

Private Duty Skilled nursing or nursing aide services that are provided in the home on an hourly basis and may include assistance with activities of daily living, housekeeping, medications, ambulation, etc.

Retirement/Independent Living Independent living with amenities such as transportation, housekeeping and meals which are offered in one monthly fee.
